On the needles: New things HAPpen

In 2015 everybody knitted haps. I think it all started with Louise of the Knit British Podcast. She not only talks about british wool and yarn but also about textile traditions from the British Isles- such as the classic Shetland Hap Shawl. In 2016 the hap-bug bit me and I started one made out of my hand spun- I decided to enrol in Gudrun Johnstons craftsy class   about the Hansel Shetland Hap.

I knit the full version, but I chose worsted handspun instead of dk- so my shawl ended being huge- and I love it. The knitting is easy, because the centerpiece is knit in garter stitch. The border is an easy to follow some kind of feather and fan pattern, the so called ‚old shale‘. The edging is a bit tricky as it is an elaborate knit-on-the-go lace edging. When you knit the full version of the Hansel and not the kerchief be prepared to end up with much fabric to turn around while knitting the edging.

This shawl is worth every effort. The blocking is a hard piece of work because of the size but when the shawl is blocked carefully, it brings out the elegance of this simple and down-to-earth-design.

I got so much wear out of my first hap, that I decided to knit another one. Again I dived deep into my stash of hand spun. This time I use thinner yarn: an alpaka-merino  two-ply.   The yarn choices for border and edging have not yet been made- I enjoy sitting in front of my stash cabinet and sorting through the options. As needle choice is really essential with this big piece of fabric knit from the inside out I ordered some new-to-me needles: The Knit Pro Royales 360° with swivel cable to avoid snagging. They have a nice feeling, the tips are rather blunt which I prefer in all needle sizes above 3,5 mm. I am using a 4,0 mm needle. The swivel mechanism works perfect for me and I plan to order more of these while replacing my interchangeables with fixed circulars. Turning the knitting, even if it is already a big piece is much easier and there are truly no kinks in the cable.I love knitting with these needles- and with my handspun. I spun it…maybe in 2013 and since then waited for the right project idea. It is woolen spun and soft through the alpaka, sturdy through the merino. It makes a nice fabric that suits the shetlandish style of this  knit accessory:

 

On/off-relationships…the needles

It might occur that I don’t show my finished objects at the moment. Knitwise this is correct. „I have planned something special down here at Socklane this evening“: I started my own Midsommar Box o‘ Sox KAL. I will keep  all the socks I knit from the beginning of the year stored in one big project bag – and on Midsommar’s day, I will gift them to me all at once! Isn’t that a self-indulgent-project par exellence? Socks get knit here all the time as a side dish- I always have at least one pair on the needles. So why not cast on all the socks you want, knit along without rules or boundaries, store them away…maybe even forget about them and than B A M! All of a sudden you get several new handknit socks for yourself just as if your Granny would have sent you are care package so that you won’t get cold feet because WINTER IS COMING.

Best thing about it in my case: I knit through my stash. I luxuriate in all those fantabulous skeins I aquired during my 2016 indie shopping experience and cast on those that tell me they want to become socks. Then I work through all my sock knitting books and magazines and choose different models, different techniques- some might even be far off my usual sock knitting comfort zone. I don’t care how long they take me. I have six months to go and however many will be finished until Midsommar’s day- they are a gift. From me, myself and I to myself, me and I. Here is a sneak peak:

1. What took you so long ? Comeback !

The moment I closed this blog in 2015 I bowed out without any regrets- and I did not reckon to return for a second piece of cake. I wandered to check other opportunities, my favourite places being those of instant cyber satisfaction- instagram and facebook. Now let me tell you something: facebook isn’t THAT bad- its banalities have their charme and I have to admit that I personally met some of the most creative folks over there. I would not want to miss it- but there isn’t enough room for displaying your ideas, visions, fails and successes- this was more easier on instagram- where I found a creative community partly consisting of those I got to know via facebook and some international crowd of fibre- and colour- fanatic creative people. Instagram is for the visional kind of communication and perception- less cat content, more food but also more works in progress and really good and inspirational stuff for the fibre enthusiast. Both media have in common that there is immediate response and the threshold for entries is much lower than with commenting in a blog-  one reason for that might be that the mobile devices display instagram feeds faster than they do with blog feeds. It is easier to flip through a timeline than hopping from blog to blog. Feeling warm and comfortable there and developping really amazing cyberrelations- instagram changed its policy and started presenting MY timeline according to THEIR algorythms- they wanted to make the decisions about what I would want to see and by whom I could be seen. So first step was to look for an alternative in social media- I tried ello  and I wasn’t all too happy. But it’s in beta- mode so I will see what happens. In my stoneage -brain I tend to be persistant and give a new thing several months bevore I give up on it. But expecting people beeing people it won’t be long before ello will not only be successful but also prey for the moneymakers and therefore presumably will also start to change policies and milk the users. Only thing to prevent beeing pushed is to have your own place- I already had it out here. So why not put some effort into renovating and making new friendships with old neighbours? Repainting the Tardis. That is what will happen here. don’t blink– as the first three are pretty self-explaining, this one might not be equally obvious. It is DW-related in that way that I will extend my blog content. It’s bigger on the inside- when you start reading regularly you will not only find fibre content but also something about the things I read, listen and watch. (I do not watch TV- but I like me some good series on those pay-tv-channels. Yes, the past year turned me into a media-snob somehow.)  Some new yet old issues have ocurred hobby wise, so there might be articles that aren’t fibre related at at all. And YES…there might also be cat content. In the blink of an eye I might change the subject- so: Don’t blink!

 

 

allons-y – and again, there he is- THE DOCTOR.  I liked it the moment the 10th Doctor used it. In this category I will display my gift of enabling- fibre-related or not. I will put links to where I found my latest object of fondness and share my field test experiences with you.

Spin Bin- in this category I will talk about all the spinning- wether I talk about what is on my hand spindles or on my wheel. This category will cover fibre, fibre prep, spinning, plying, learning new techniques and mending the tools, all that is spinning-related in some sense.

one hook at a time will cover all the crochet although my focus is on knitting- BUT: I like to take short excursions in the world of crochet and tunesian crochet- many things happen there, design- and constructionwise. So this field of needlework attracts me far more often than in the past ten years.

My nextdoor neighbours- Was mich im Netz umgarnt

Ich bin Podcast-Hörerin und -Seherin vor allem. Natürlich habe ich einen Schwerpunkt im Bereich „Faser“- aber ich habe auch außerhalb dieses Themenbereiches Interessen, man glaubt es kaum. Dieses Medien, die ich nutze, zähle ich zu meiner Netznachbarschaft und die möchte ich ab sofort in Abständen hier vorstellen.

I really love audio- and videocasts. Not only those with fibre content but I have to admit that this is my core area. In 2013 I discovered via ravelry that there are knitting-related podcasts not only in Germany and fortunately their number is still growing. Personally I stopped listening to most of the German audiocasts, to be true I merely listen to one German audiocast: „Strickspleen“, run by Elke from Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate. I turned towards UK based podcasts and very soon realized, that they much more meet what I expect from podcasts that are labelled „ fibre content“. Why is that? In my taste I don’t want to hear hours and hours about people’s political issues when I expect to read about wool, yarn, spinning, knitting and all the dyi-stuff I love so much in my leisure time. Nothing against a healthy amount of background information ( fair trade options and ethical husbandry are my concern as well, don’t get me wrong) We have a very vivid culture of political , ecological and ethical discussions in our home and with our friends- I have no further need for people ranting about the socio-cultural problems our society has to deal with. I like the humour and the passion shown in several English podcast. From time to time I will write about those that impress and entertain me the most .

In 2013 fing ich mit deutschen Podcasts an, auf die ich in den Ravelry-Foren gestoßen bin – da setzte im Herbst 2013 ein Boom ein, der dankenswerter Weise bis heute anhält – allerdings ist meine ganz persönliche Freude nicht ganz ungetrübt. Die deutschen Audio-Podcasts verbringen meiner ganz persönlichen Meinung nach sehr viel Zeit damit, sich über Dinge wie Stress und was man alles im Leben NICHT schafft zu beklagen und das bringt wenig die LUST herüber, die dieses Hobby mit sich bringt. Zudem wird man auch bei einigen für meinen Geschmack zu weitreichend in Tipps zum politisch korrekten Verhalten in allen möglichen Lebensbereichen „geschult“. Und zwar leider mit wertenden Belehrungen in Form von: Was ist politisch korrekt (= erlaubt) zu Essen und warum Fettleibigkeit nicht als abstoßend empfunden werden darf … Das artete meiner persönlichen Meinung nach zu sehr in Kopfzensur aus und das Spiel kann man getrost ohne mich spielen. Und selbst wenn ich hier zugestehe, dass man ja wohl podcasten darf, was man will: Ja, aber dann sollte ich nicht „Fasercontent“ labeln. In meiner Freizeit folge ich keinem politischen Mainstream und keinem fanatischen Perfektionismus – ich hab keine Zeit mehr für so einen UN-Sinn. Diese Erfahrungen in Sachen Podcasts hat mich in den anglophonen Raum schauen lassen und die Podcast – Szene dort ist eher nach meinem Geschmack. Ich höre nur noch einen einzigen deutschsprachigen Podcast aus dem Bereich FASER und das ist der Strickspleen aus Mainz. Elke ist leidenschaftlich dilettantisch, charmant und spritzig, manchmal nachdenklich und sagt ihre Meinung, auch wenn sie dann einen Shitstorm erntet. Sie ist integer soweit das heute möglich ist bei all den Achtsamkeitsanfordernissen, die wir vermeintlich erfüllen „müssen“ und verliert dabei NIE die Selbstkritik aus den Augen und hat einen wirklich natürlichen Humor. Ihr Kampf mit dem Equipment und dem W-Lan ist bewundernswert und erinnert mich manchmal an Don Quichotte. Diese Frau sollte sich flattern lassen, denn sie bringt mich immer zum Schmunzeln und Nachdenken und hat wirklich schöne Buchtipps und eine kerngesunde Ernährungsphilosophie. Ihr Podcast/Blog ist empfehlenswert für alle die wissen: Das Leben (auch das Stricken) an sich geht nur mit Humor. Es ist ein reiner Strick-Podcast, kein Weben, kein Spinnen, Elke will sich nicht verzetteln und ist da eisern.

I also like to get to know fibre related blogs and communities.The social media I frequently use are instagram, facebook and pinterest. I do not use messengers so these three are my most immediate way to communicate with other users. A German blog I really llike is „Wollstash“. It’s run by Anke and her husband Matze and connect to this blog are also a facebook site and a small shop where they offer hand made items.They dye fibres and wool, sew, knit , crochet and spin. Their photographs show their love for hand made stuff, the posts show how to live a bit more green and sustainable- and where to find inspiration for a more creative everyday life. Further members of the „wollstash“ household are the three kiddos and the family furries.Even If you don’t understand the written word, the fotographs are worth a look.

Natürlich stöbere ich nicht nur durch Podcasts/Videocasts. Ich wandere auch gerne von Seite zu Seite, habe ein, zwei Handarbeits- und Handwerksforen für mich erschlossen und es ist manchmal schwer, die sozialen Netzwerke komplett auszublenden, da auch diese reichlich Spielwiese für Nadeljunkies bieten. Ich mag besonders instagram, pinterest und facebook um Anregungen zu erhalten , Austausch über Projekte und Materialrecherche zu betreiben und natürlich auch mal ein Motivationswinkerchen abzukassieren- da ich keinen Messengerdienst benutze, sind dieses Medien die für mich unmittelbarste Form, mit der community zu dialogisieren.

Heute möchte ich euch einen deutschsprachigen Blog anempfehlen, den Wollstash .

Wollstash, das sind Anke und Matze, ihre drei Kinder und die Familien- Furries. Anke habe ich über eine Handarbeitsgruppe bei facebook kennengelernt und fand sie im direkt Chat von Anfang an cool, obwohl ich nichts von ihrer Handarbeit kannte- das änderte sich schnell und seitdem finde ich sie noch cooler. Denn Ihre Handarbeit und ihr Handwerk steht für was. Eine Haltung zur Welt. Und die ist…nicht immer ausgegoren aber immer auf dem Weg. Immer ehrlich mit sich und mit uns als LeserINNEn und immer kreativ im Umgang mit Ressourcen, offen für neue Gangarten, um die Zukunft für sich zu meistern, denn die (zumindest die zweibeinigen – wir wissen alle, wie Katzen sind…) Haushaltsmitglieder beim Wollstash haben begriffen, was viele immer noch nicht hören wollen: Das Eis wird dünner und wir werden alle bewusster mit limitierten Ressourcen umgehen müssen. Hier wird nicht der moralische Zeigefinder geschwungen und auf Umerziehung gesetzt – hier werden Anregungen gegeben, eigene Wissensquellen gezeigt und und geteilt und es gibt sogar einen angegliederten kleinen Shop, in dem feine Sachen für Kreative angeboten werden – nicht im Konsumterror, sondern so wie es geht, im Flow und ohne Gewinnterror. Die Fotos sind spitze und eigentlich sollten die beiden einen Foodblog machen, denn die Bilderchen bringen einen zum Sabbern, würden sie Torten fotografieren, würde ich mich ständig selber zum Kaffee einladen.

Yarn Giveaway 2015!!! Rules & price show-off for #midsommarsticka!!!

Das Neue Jahr hat Euch alle bereits eingeholt, während ich noch ein wenig in meiner  krankheitsbedingten Blase bin und nur langsam wieder auf die Hufe, in die Bewegung und damit nach Draussen und unter Echtzeitbedingungen komme. Ein richtig hartes Winterwetter hat uns hier im Rheinland noch nicht ereilt. Ich rechne auch nicht mehr wirklich damit, aber der Teufel ist bekanntermassen ein Eichhörnchen.
Meine Gedanken richten sich auf den Frühling und auf den Sommer, den wir wie letztes Jahr ausgiebig genießen möchten, denn auch wenn hier keine Schneestürme toben, so mögen wir den Lichtmangel nicht besonders uns freuen uns, dass die Tage nun wieder länger werden. Das Thema meines Giveaways wird dementsprechend MIDSOMMAR sein. Midsommar ist der schwedische Name für das Sommersonnwendfest,an welchem der längste Tag des Jahres gefeiert wird. Das ist kein Zeitpunkt, sondern ein Zeitraum, nämlich vom 20. bis zum 26.06  jeden Jahres. Als „Midsommarsdag“ wird  der Samstag gefeiert, der in diese Zeit fällt. Kalendarisch ist  Mittwommer auf den 21.06. festgelegt. Gefeiert werden die fehlende Dunkelheit, böse Geister werden vertrieben und ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass es einfach auch was damit zu tun hat, dass man sich nach getaner Aussäh- und Feldarbeit ab Juni schon langsam auf die Ernte freuen und den Hochsommer bis zur Erntezeit ab August/September richtig schön genießen kann. und darum soll es im übertragenen Sinne auch in diesem Giveaway gehen: Sich auf den Midosmmar freuen, ein wenig darauf hinarbeiten und ihn dann genießen.

So this is what the call 2015….I am still tied to the house- movement still means pain and a swollen ankle. Progress is slow but I am working on it while  I dream about spring and summer. Up in the north peole celebrate the short summer they have there, especially one week in June from the 20th to the 26th- the saturday that is in this week is a special day, the „Midsommarsdag“. People celebrate the warmth and the missing darkness because the sun does not really go down these days of the year. On Midosmmarsdag people meet outside, have late night picknics and fireworks and party a lot to keep away „evil ghosts“ as their pagan ancestors did- I read that there are still druids and other pagan believers like the wicka witches to whom this day has a special magical meaning. The calendar tells us, that on June 21rst is the longest day of the year and all theses attributes make it a nice motto for my yarn giveaway.

Dieser Giveaway soll Euch inspirieren, über Sommerstricken nachzudenken, ein Thema, das jährlich in den einschlägigen Foren diskutiert wird. Oftmals wird so lange darüber sinniert, was man mit welchem Garn denn schön stricken könnte, dass das Sommerstrickteil dann nicht rechtzeitig angeschlagen wurde- und somit seine Vollendung erst dann erfährt, wenn der Sommer schon fast wieder vorbei ist.  Ich möchte von Euch wissen: Was wolltet Ihr immer schon einmal für den Sommer aus dem Bereich Bekleidung und Accessoires stricken? Welches Garn wolltet Ihr immer schon einmal für ein solches Teil verwenden?  Und ich möchte, dass Ihr dieses Teil in der Zeit vom 15.01. bis zum 21.06.2015 anschlagt und zu mindestens 80% vollendet. Dann kommt der zweite Post, in welchem Ihr Euer mindestens zu  80% fertiges Midsommar-Strickwerk zeigt. Bei einem Oberteil wären das etwas Vorder- und Rückenteil, bei einer Mütze würden die Abnahmen für die Spitze noch fehlen,bei Socken müsste der erste Sock fertig und der zweite deutlich über die Ferse hinaus gewachsen sein. Wenn Ihr diese Aufgaben erfüllt, dann habt Ihr nicht nur die Möglichkeit, ein wirklich schönes Preispaket zu gewinnen, sondern habt auch ein fast oder sogar ganz fertiges Sommerstrickteil passend zur Jahreszeit. One Skein of hand dyed Sockwool -cotton-mix that comes with 437 yds on 100g in turquoise-coral-grey

Zwei Stränge Merino superwash in Blaugrüntönen mit Stellana-Bling, pro Strang LL 400m auf 100g. Diese beiden Stränge sind für ein größeres Projekt passend zueinander gefärbt. Sie ergeben alternierend verstrickt eine wunderbare Wilderung. Etwa bei einem Schultertuch, dass man sich an kühlen Sommerabenden um die Schultern legen kann!
Two skeins of hand dyed  merino superwash with stellana bling, each skein is 100g and 4327 yds. They are dyed matchy-matchy and will give a really nice colour flow when knitted alternated for a bigger project. Both yarns are fingering weight.

Alle Stränge sind mit Säurefarben von Landscape und Sewo gefärbt. Ich kann nicht garantieren, dass die Stränge hypoallergen sind. Wer diesbezüglich Bedenken hat, sollte eine Teilnahme/ persönliche Verwendung der Stränge nicht in Betracht ziehen. Die Stränge sind alle hitzefixiert, die fertigen Strickstücke sollten jeodch die ersten paar Male separat gewaschen werden. The skeins are dyed with Landscapes acid dyes and Sewo acid dyes. I cannot guarantee that they are hypoallergenic- anybody who has concerns about that might better not use them for personal knitting. I have no information about the origins of the  undyed yarns, they were bought at www. supergarne.com. All skeins are heat- fixated but should be washed separatedly or with similar colours the first few times.

 

Last minute blogpost !!! Das war es für 2014 !!!

 

Heute war der gelb-rote Mann da- immer ein Bote des Internet-Füllhorns…jemand sollte mal einen Göttin mit den Attributen des 24/7- Konsums erfinden. Und ich postete munter auf Instagram, dass das letzte Wollpäckchen des Jahres 2014 eingetroffen sei-

Da es traf mich wie ein Schlag: Du hast seit langem nix mehr gebloggt.

Die Gründe dafür sind nicht zeitlicher Natur. Mir ging es miserabel, da ich wie bei einer schlechten Neuauflage des Stückes„Orthopädisches Drama 2013“ nun in der Version „Orthopädisches Drama 2.0“ (gerne auch „Die hard – with a vengeance“) auch diesen Herbst und den Jahreswechsel mit Schmerzen, Bewegungsunfähigkeit und auf Krücken passieren lassen muss. Und irgendwann Anfang Dezember hatte ich dann einen Meltdown und musste mich bis vor ein paar Tagen von der Welt isolieren. Unter anderem blieb einfach auch trotz kreativer Tätigkeit meinerseits mein Blog auf der Strecke, denn ich konnte mich nicht hinknien, um die fertigen Stücke fotografierbar zu blocken. So habe ich also serienguckenderweise ein paar wirklich schöne Dinge produziert, wobei die Garne leider heute nicht gezeigt werden- ich kann immer noch nicht lange am Stück mit dem Minstrel spinnen und auf dem Espinner zwirnen mag ich gar nicht. Da spinne ich lieber meine Singles drauf- was bin ich doch froh, dass ich mich weiland dafür entschied, mir dieses von einigen SpinnerINNEN verpönte Schätzchen zu kaufen, als absehbar war, dass meine Knieprobleme nicht nur vorübergehender Natur sein würden. Eine Investition, die mir damals dekadent erschien und sich nunmehr schon zum zweiten Mal als rettend erweist. Ich hab auch, entgegen meiner Ankündigung keine Weihnachtsverlosung gemacht- es ging eben alles nicht und ich bin all meinen LeserINNEN dankbar, wenn sie mir trotzdem die Treue halten- ist auch besser, wenn ich eine anders geartete Verlosung mache, denn just in 2014 hagelte es Weihnachts-KALS in den einschlägig bekannten Foren und Plattformen. Heute gibt es ein paar Fotos und am 15. Januar, wenn wir uns alle von den Feiertagen und dem Jahreswechsel erholt haben starte ich dann die Verlosung und stelle den Preis vor- der ist nämlich wirklich lecker und ich finde, da lohnt sich das Warten. Bis dahin wünsche ich Euch allen einen guten Jahreswechsel, super tolle Startbedingungen für 2015 und dass Ihr alle so klug seid, das mit den Vorsätzen zu lassen!!!

This morning arrived the last wool delivery via DHL in 2014 – and while posting a pic of this event under the title „ Last woolIy mail in #2014“ I realized that I had stopped posting here for a while. This is due to my orthopaedic problems I had after having fallen down the stairs, broken my ankle and had surgery with some screwing and nailing the ruptured syndesmosis in November. I felt miserable all November and even worse in December and therefore posponed the Christmas-Giveaway on this blog I had thus planned. For the better, as it now seems, because in 2014 there were sooooo many phantastic KALs going on- it would have been unfair to bother my readers with another tempting one- and tempting it will be because of the price I plan. I did a lot during my retirement from the real christmassy world. But I could neither blog out my FOs nor ply my espun singles on the minstrel for up to the 18^th of December I was not able to treddle at all and since it is still a matter of delicacy. Although the one flexible screw has been removed, I cannot use my foot more than a few minutes because there are still 6 more to cause pain. So today there are some photos of my FOs, beeing blocked as best as possible under the given circumstances. But there will be a big re-blocking-party when I can move properly to do it right. And on January 15th when we all recovered from the holidays and the New Year’s Night  I will start my giveaway, showing the price and tell you, what you will have to do to enter the drawing. So I just wish all of you a nice hogmonay’s nite , a good start into 2015 and may you all have the wisdom to avoid New Year’s pledges!!!

Hier haben wir den Boneyard Shawl von Stephen West- ein Designer, den ich erst seit ein paar Wochen favorisiere. Ich versteh bis heute den Hype und die Hysterie nicht, die um diesen wirklich sympathischen Mann gemacht wird. Seine Designs sind solide gemacht, handwerklich sehr gut nachvollziehbar und sein Farbgeschmack ist erfreulich grell- aber muss das zwangsläufig dazu führen, dass man in hysterisches virtuelles Gekreische ausbricht, sobals er ein neues Design auf Instagram vorstellt? Ehrlich, ich liebe den Online -Kurs Online-Class von ihm auf Craftsy, den ich mir quasi sofort nach meinem Sturz als Zeitvertreib gegönnt habe, aber es gibt so viele gute Strickdesigner, dass das, was Stephen West außergewöhnlich macht nicht seine Designs sind. Es ist seine Art, Wissen zu vermitteln. Und dafür bin ich ihm dankbar. Ich habe vier meiner handgefärbten Garne gestrickt, jeweils zwei doppelfädig. Nadelstärke 4,5

This is the Boneyard-Shawl by Stephen West. I love his designs although I am not one of those that get hysterical as soon as this really nice guy publishes some new design pics on Instagram. He is very good at teaching people so go get his craftsy class- it’s worth the price and there are often discounts on the classes! I knitted it out of 4 skeins of my had dyed yarrn in doubled threads.

 

Hier haben wir dann meinen ersten ernsthaften Lace Shawl aus dem von mir erworbenen Buch „Sock Yarn Shawls“ von Jen Lucas. Ich habe wiederum zwei meiner handgefärbten Garne im Wolle-Seide-Mix verarbeitet, diesmal einfädig aber alternierend, damit sich die beiden Färbungen gut ergänzen können.Nadelstärke 3,5.

This is my first ambitious lace shwal knitted after a pattern by Jen Lucas out of her book „Sock Yarn Shawls“ which I highly recommend if you are not a passionate lace knitter but sometimes like the effect. Very understandable patterns and good charts. I alternated two of my hand dyed merino-silk-bases for the autumnal effect.

This is the Zucchiniblüte, a free ravelry pattern. Here again I used two skeins of my hand dyed, this time 50% wool 50% cotton. I had to redye the blue because I was afraid to run out of yarn- but all ended well.

 

 

Die rote Mütze aus Tweed von Wolle Rödel ist nach den Handschuhen entstanden, die ich für BSE (best spouse ever) gemacht habe und weil ich von dieser preisvernünftigen Tweedqualität in 8-fach Sockengarn so begeistert bin, habe ich dem Pater auch noch eine geringelte Radlmütze gemacht.

IKniMaMo – Individual knit massive month- November

Im Augenblick bleibt mir deutlich mehr Zeit zum Kreativ-Sein als vor dem 02.11.2014. Ich bin böse gestürzt und habe mir eine nicht unerhebliche Weber-C-Fraktur zugezogen mit allem, was diese Verletzungsart zu bieten hat – Ich bin die Art Mädchen, die nix auslässt.
Right at the moment I have enough time to work with my fibres, due to a really severe Weber-C- fracture of my righ ankle. It will take six weeks until I will be allowed to put some stress o this ankle, so I will have time to play around with my stash.I the kinda girl that takes it all….tchakkah!

Nun bin ich zu sechs Wochen Nullbelastung verurteilt und kann mich dem Himmel sei Dank, meinen Fasern widmen. Ich habe ein paar Handstulpen im Pfauenmuster gestrickt, passend zu meinem Broomstick – Lace – Schal, der ja bereits im Sommer aus einer Spontanidee heraus entstand. Ich habe das gleiche Garn ( „Rainbow“ von www.supergarne.com) verwendet und mit 2,5-er Spielnadeln verstrickt. Ich weiß gar nicht mehr, wo ich das Pfauenmuster her habe, es ist aber einfach zu verinnerlichen und strickt sich von selbst. Die Rüsche ist ein klassisches Konstrukt: Eine Runde lang mache ich aus jeder zweiten Masche zwei Maschen. Dann stricke ich da drei Runden drüber, das Ganze wiederhole ich noch einmal und kette dann möglichst elastisch ab.

I knitted a pair of of fingerless mittens matchy-matchy the broomstick – lace – shawl I did in August. I used the same yarn: „Rainbow“ by www.supergarne.com . The pattern is called „Peacock“ but I forgot where I got it from. The ruffle is a classic one: Make two stitches of every other stitch, then knit 3 rounds plain stockinette, then repeat another time. To bind off, use a stretchy bind – off, my choice is the Icelandic – bind – off.

Ich habe mein erst Paar Socken, welches ich aus handgesponnener Wolle gestrickt habe, ribbeln müssen – die Zwirnung war nicht stabil genug und die Socken hatten riesengroße Löcher. Ich hatte die Wahl, entweder zu ribbeln oder zu stopfen- da die Löcher unter der Sohle waren habe ich mich fürs Ribbeln entschieden- Spitzen und Fersen kann man gut neu anstricken, aber unter der Sohle ist die Gefahr von blasenverursachenden Rändern einfach zu hoch. Also habe ich den Strang nach dem Ribbeln zuerst mal probeweise als Perücke getragen,dann gewaschen und gewickelt und nun harrt ein wunderschönes zweifädig gezwirntes Masham-Seide-Garn auf eine neue Verwendung.

The first pair of socks I knitted out ouf one of my handspuns did not last long: I had substantial wholes at the sole, so I decided to rip them out and reconsider what to do with this pretty Masham – Silk – 2 – ply. I considered to wear it as a wig – then decided against it, let it take a bath and reskeined it. I see some mittens in the future of this yarn. Two plies are not sturdy enough to wear long, at least the sole would have needed some enforcement, using an additional thread. Lesson learned, no regrets.

Eine weiterer „22-Little-Clouds“ von Martina Behm ist mir von den Nadeln gehüpft, dieses Mal in Grüntönen aus handgefärbten und handgesponnenem Garn. Ich habe dazu Garne verwendet, die ich schon 2012 und 2013 fertig gestellt habe und die alleine nicht genug Lauflänge für ein schönes großes Tuch ergaben – aber kombiniert ein wunderbares Bild ergeben. Weil ich so begeister von diesem muster bin, zeige ich Euch auch noch einmal den ersten Schal in dieser machart, der ein artgerechtes Zuhause bei einer äußerst strickwürdigen Menschin gefunden hat, was mich immer noch mit Stolz erfüllt. Am Ende ist dennoch knapp geworden und mussten den „Icelandic – bind – off“ in einem anderen handgesponnen Garn aus meinem Deep Stash machen als den ursprünglichen. Das passt aber trotzdem ganz gut, wie man sieht. I did another „22 – Little – Clouds – Shawlette“ by Martina Behm – one of my favourite Behm patterns for hand spun yarn. I chose to work with severals of my hand spuns to use up some stash and to get a bigger version – I am a tall woman and look ridiculous with tiny shawls. Valkyries wouldn’t wear mini skirts- well some would…depending on their leg-shape, wouldn’t they? I chose yarn I spun in 2012 and 2013 and at the end I lost yarn chicken and had to bind off in a totally different yarn, I like it very much, though.

Mein weltbester Ehemann hat noch ein Paar Socken aus selbstringelnden Garn der Sockenwolle – Hausmarke von Wolle Rödel bekommen und sich dann noch gleich Wolle für Handschuhe ausgesucht wie bereits erwähnt. Die habe ich zurzeit auf den Nadeln und verzweifle am anatomischen Daumen, so dass ich jetzt den zweiten Handschuh mit einem Daumen Marke Eigenbau versuche…und auch hier wird wahrscheinlich dann der erste Handschuh noch mal neu gestrickt werden. Das macht mir aber gar nix. Erstens ist es noch viel zu warm für Handschuhe. Zweitens: Je älter ich werde, desto pingeliger werde ich.

I knitted a pair of self-striping for the BSE and he was happy as always…one of the knitworthiest persons I ever got to know. A pair of gloves ist in progress – I am still working on the perfect thumb gusset. Once again I will end up in having knit three gloves for a a pair – something I really don’t care for because having a good custom made prototype is worth every effort. It’s all about tweed. Both yarns, the self-striping as well as the tweedy one are house brands of „ Wolle Rödel“ very nice quality, soft, but not too soft to make socks and gloves (concerning the pilling effect), superwash and available in a wide range of colours

Dann habe ich ein wunderschönes Schalmuster gefunden, und zwar das Muster „Zucchiniblüte“, zu finden als freies Muster auf www.ravelry.com. Hier verstricke ich handgefärbtes Baumwoll-Merino-Garn auf 3,5-er Nadeln. Der Schal ist asymmetrisch und arbeitet bei der Wellenbildung (im Muster „Fächer genannt“) mit verkürzten Reihen, die Fächerbreiten sind beliebig und einfach abwandelbar, ein Mustert mit hoher Adaptionsfähigkeit… das liebe ich. Ich verstricke zwei Stränge à 100 g bei einer Lauflänge von 420m, da mit ein richtig großer Schal rauskommt. Ich habe den hohen Wuchs einer Wallküre und tendiere auch dazu, mich ebenso zu kleiden. So Mini-Schälchen an mir rumzuppeln zu lasen widerspricht meiner ästhetischen Würde. Ich dachte zunächst, mir würde die aquamarinfarbene Wolle ausgehen und habe deshalb ersucht auf einem der noch vorrätigen ungefärbten Garne den Farbton nach zu färben. Obwohl ich ein anderes Garn nehmen musste, da Baumwolle gerade aus war, habe ich den Farbton sehr schön getroffen. So, wie es sich jetzt anlässt, wird der Schal aber mit den Knäuel auskommen und die Verwendung des Merino -Garnes wird nicht nötig werden. Auch gut, mir fällt schon was ein.

I found a very nice free shawl pattern on www.ravelry.com, called „ Zucchiniblüte“. It is asymmetric, with plain stockinette and garter stitch rows in turns and a leafy-wavy border worked with simple short rows. I love patterns like this wich are easy to modify and to transfer to other garments- maybe matching fingerless mittens or a hat. I work it with two skeins of my hand dyed yarn in 50% wool/50% cotton. I have two skeins of the variegated and I fear to run out of the tonal- so I decided to re-dye that one. I had no wool/wotton-mix left so I had to do it on pure wool- and I like the result.The pattern is easy to memorize and therefore a very nice mindless project that is not boring and makes you knit fast because the short row sections have the same effect as self striping yarn…

September/October review

 

Man kann nicht sagen, dass ich wenig online war in den vergangenen Wochen- aber für’s Blogartikelschreiben hat es nicht gereicht. Dafür habe ich schöne Dinge mit Fasern gemacht. Heute geht es aber nur um Stricken, die Spinnergebnisse lassen noch auf sich warten, ich hab noch jede Menge Meter vor mir.

One cannot say that I was not online in the past weeks- but I was not eager to write blogposts – not as eager as doing fabulous things with yarn. Todays posting is all about knitting- spinning will have to wait until I have many more metres of singles finished.

Wunderbar. Ich habe meine erste stranded Mütze einfach so angeschlagen und mal was ausprobiert – das ganze aber mit handgesponnenem Alpaka und Merino aus eigenen Färbung. Ich wusste weder, wie viele Maschen ich brauchen würde – das habe ich aus meiner nun mehr nicht mehr ganz so geringen Erfahrung heraus geschätzt. Noch wusste ich, wie ich die Fäden halten wollte – ich hab einfach wie früher, wenn ich schon mal zweifarbige Bündchen gestrickt habe, die beidhändige Methode beibehalten – und sie ist perfekt . Es geht ohne Verwicklungen, dem Muster lässt sich prima folgen, die Geschwindigkeit ist wirklich super, Fadenspannung ist kein Problem und ich mag den Stricktakt. Bei den Abnahmen kam ich kurz ins Grübeln, habe mich dann für eine einfache Musterung entschieden und klassische Mützenabnahmen gestrickt: 3 grüne und drei rote Maschen jeweils im Wechsel, dann habe ich erst die grünen Maschen von rechts nach links zusammen gestrickt und dann die roten Maschen und dann nochmal zwei grüne Runden, in denen ich jeweils zwei Maschen zusammengestrickt habe, bis nur noch 8 Maschen übrig waren.

I seriously started stranded knitting and cast on my first stranded hat- without pattern just by guess and by gosh. I am knitting two-handedly. This is a method that came to me natuarlly in the past when I did two-coloured ribbings on hats or mittens- and it works perfecty as far as tension and speed are really equal on both hands. I only improvised the decreases but I think this hat is  beautyful- and it made me cast on two more. Stranded will be BIG from now on. The green and the natural coloured wool is hand spun, the green-orange wool is commercial, soft  Merino bei rico

Und noch eine Passion: Handschuhstricken: Hier habe ich erst mal getestet und insgesamt drei Handschuhe gestrickt, bevor ich ein Paar fertig hatte. Ich habe dabei auf das Buch „Der geniale Handschuhworkshop“ von Ewa Jostes zurück gegriffen und für den Standardhandschuh dann so lange die Zu-und Abnahmen modifiziert, bis ich einen „angegossenen“ Handschuh hatte. Nun werde ich mit Mustermöglichkeiten experimentieren. Ich mag Handschuhstricken weil ich es ziemlich genial finde, selbst gestrickte Handschuhe aus Garn zu fertigen , das handgefärbt und sogar vielleicht handgesponnen ist. Handschuhstricken geht schnell, ist aber in meinen Augen im Gegensatz zum Socken kein Mitnahmeprojekt, zumindest für mich noch nicht. Die Daumenfrage ist genauso spannend wie die Fersenfrage beim Sockenstricken. Ich liebe die Möglichkeiten, es ist wie mit dem Sockenstricken…es wird mich wahrscheinlich verfolgen. Hier habe ich mit 2.5 Nadeln gestrickt, das Garn ist ein Rest selbst gefärbte Sockenwolle aus 2013. Ich habe die Handfläche immer auf einer Rundstricknadel gehabt und die Daumen zunächst mit sehr kurzen Handschuhnadeln aus Bambus gestrickt. Diese hatte ich mir in grauer Vorzeit, als der Gedanke ans Handschuhstricken noch ein ein zweifelndes Grinsen in mein Tagtraumgesicht zauberte, bestellt und zwar bei dem wunderbaren Wollschaf

Leider ging mir eine dieser praktischen Nadeln relativ flott kaputt und ich bin einfach auf normale kurze DPNs umgestiegen. Ich stellte fest, dass ich mit den 10 – cm – Nadeln gut klar komme und gar keine speziell kurzen Handschuhnadeln darüber hinaus benötige.

Then I started another „new-to-me“: Knitting gloves. It worked. I used a book „Der geniale Handschuhworkshop“- wich is the equally genius equivalent to the sockknittingteaching- book „ Der geniale Sockenworkshop“. First I knitted one glove according to the measurements given in the book for my glove size- then I started a second one to make the neccessary modifications- then I ripped off the first up to the cuff and re-knitted it. Now I am happy and exited, momentarily working on a second pair, this time with colour AND cabling- free improvised by Fadenwerkerin….and Hubby just asked the other day, wether I could knit up some Tweed gloves for him – SHURE I CAN! I hesitated for about three years to start knitting gloves because I thought it beeing fiddly- it is not. I keep the stitches of the palm on a circ using magic loop and knit the  fingers one by one- first the thumb, small finger, ring finger, middle finger and index finger. I had bought extra glove knitting needle some time ago- one broke after a short time and I switched to regular 10cm KnitPro DPNs. Good to experience that one does not really need Handschuhstricknadeln, though.

Nun habe ich auch noch eine Stola aus Handgefärbtem und Handgesponnenem gestrickt. Dieses Alpaka-Garn ist so fluffig und weich, ich könnte mich ständig damit umgeben – das Spinnen an sich ist ja schon ein Vergnügen, aber das von mir fabrizierte navajo-gezwirnte Garn dann zu verstricken, und dann auch noch in einem wirklich schönen Muster…hachja, das machte echt Freude. Ich habe es relativ aggressiv geblockt, da ich die Blätterstruktur richtig auffächern wollte – und ich bin noch nicht so erfahren als Blockerin, da ich bis dato wenig, eigentlich kein Lace gestrickt habe. Das wird sich ändern. Ob ich jemals diese fragilen Spinnennetze stricken werde, kann ich nicht beurteilen, aber dieser Isländische Lace Stil, der gefällt mir und passt zu meinem Kleiderschrank

Then I started into Lace-knitting. I found this allover leaf-pattern and decided to put some framing stitches to it and knit up a huge alpaca stole out of handspun. I started to love lace knitting- but only with these thicker yarn- I used a worsted three-ply. I love this style, it is often described as „Icelandic Lace“ and I see more of it in the future. I looooove this stole.
